How to change PHP settings in cPanel

This guide explains how to change common PHP settings for your website in cPanel.

PHP settings can affect upload limits, memory limits, execution time, and other website behaviour.

Step 1: Log in to cPanel

Log in to cPanel through your WebhostingNZ client area.

If you are unsure how to access cPanel, please follow this guide first:

Step 2: Open Select PHP Version

In cPanel, open Select PHP Version.

This is usually located under the Software section.

Step 3: Open PHP Options

Click the Options tab.

This will show the PHP settings available for your account.

Common PHP settings

You may see options such as:

  • memory_limit
  • upload_max_filesize
  • post_max_size
  • max_execution_time
  • max_input_vars
  • display_errors

The exact options available may vary depending on the server and PHP version.

Step 4: Change the required setting

Click the value you want to change and select or enter the new value.

For example, if a WordPress theme or plugin requires a higher upload limit, you may need to increase:

  • upload_max_filesize
  • post_max_size

If a WordPress plugin or large import is timing out, you may need to increase:

  • max_execution_time
  • memory_limit

Important notes

Only increase PHP limits where needed.

Very high limits may not improve performance and can sometimes cause other issues.

Some settings may be limited by the hosting plan or server configuration.
